The Self-Directed Man

When I was young, men never stopped to ask for directions.  Today, this continues, not just with men, but women too! We’re too proud, to admit we’re lost and need help to get us to our destination on time.

It’s the same way with our spiritual destination. I see a world of lost, hopeless souls trying to save themselves; to find their own way to salvation.  Thinking they can somehow earn their way to heaven through good deeds and hard work. Many believe they can accomplish this on their own. How wrong they are.

In Luke 12:16-21, Jesus tells the story of a self-directed man trying to make his own way and secure is own future without help from anyone – including God.  The Father doesn’t mince words with this man.

Entering the scene in verse 20, God immediately calls him a fool! Don’t miss the severity of the condemnation.  By relying solely on his self-focused shortsightedness and pride, this man left nothing behind at the end of his life – except a pile of crops.

This message is just as relevant for us today as it was in Jesus’ time.

When we strike out on our own and initiate actions with no thought of God, we behave like fools. The Lord has a plan for our lives.  He knows (we don’t) where we’ll succeed and where we will fail. We must trust Him to provide the direction we need.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

May Jesus truly become our Lord and Savior that we trust fully and completely to guide every step we take, every thought we think, and every word we speak this coming week and beyond.

In Christ,

Bill
